Japan has many iconic tourist attractions — from Tokyo's buzzing Shibuya crossing to the serene torii gates of Kyoto's many temples to Hokkaido's top-notch powder snow.

Now there's a new addition: hair salons.

This trend was on full display earlier this month, when American teenager Lily Romero beamed with delight as she tossed her hair back for a photo following a four-hour treatment at a Tokyo hair salon that made her once-wavy hair silky straight.
