Chinese leader Xi Jinping has used a high-profile summit with Donald Trump to urge the United States to formally "oppose" Taiwan independence, delivering one of his most explicit calls for the U.S. president to shift Washington's stance toward Taipei. Xi's comments during their summit in Washington on Thursday came as Trump hailed the two superpowers' "common interests" that he said had "even made us allies in World War II" — remarks likely to raise eyebrows in Tokyo, a U.S. ally currently embroiled in a festering dispute with Beijing and facing pressure from Trump on both trade and defense issues.
